Once again aggravating all the Canada-haters* out there, here's my NHL playoff thread. Just in time: face-off is 10 minutes away.
In the east: Washington 4, Montréal 1 – The Habs will come out strong at first, possibly winning 1 in Washington, but eventually Halak and/or Price will cry uncle and it's all gonna be downhill from there. New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 1 – Brodeur vs. ... what the hell is whoever's name whom Philly will volunteer out of the half-dozen or so goalies they went through this year. If Kovalchuk gets out of his slump, it's gonna be a short series. Buffalo 4, Boston 2 – Despite Rask's heroics: the second-worst offence of the league agaisnt Ryan Miller, nuff said. Ottawa 4, Pittsburgh 2 – The Sens have been surprising a lot of observers lately, and they're hot. There it is, my upset call of the year. And in the west: San Jose 4, Colorado 2 – The Sharks will finally win one, as the Avs' inexperience will prove to be the difference. Chicago 4, Nashville 0 – Nashville has a team? Vancouver 4, Los Angeles 3 – The Kings will not go easily, but the Canucks are just too strong on every level. Still, this could be the best series of the 1st round. Detroit 4, Phoenix 1 – Rising from the ashes indeed. What with the Ti-cats going for .500 last year of all strange phenomenas, perhaps Tarkin's last year prediction doesn't sound so wacky anymore – except that the Coyotes aren't in Hamilton yet. Nah, I'm just jacking you off, the mongrels will be lucky to win one. *You know who you are. And for the last &*(%?& time, we don't say "aboot". It's you who keep pronouncing it "abawt" |

Wow, ten views: this club is literally awash wih hockey fever. Not sure if I should even bother. What the hell, I'm having fun.
Okay... breaking even. Could have just flipped a coin. But then, I'm not as familiar with West conference teams, which explains why I went 0-4 in the East and 4-0 in the West... wait, what? In the East: Montréal 4, Pittsburgh 3 - Common sense be damned: I'll go with partisanship this time. Besides, as ordinary as Varlamov has been, he has done much better than Fleury did against the Sens. And with all the attention centered on Halak, we forget that Cammalleri is presently third in points in the league. Boston 4, Philadelphia 2 - "Whoever's" name turned out to be Boucher, and he outdueled none other than Marty Brodeur. I'm officially flabbergasted. For chrissakes, he outmatched everyone, even Halak. But the Flyers have lost Gagné, Laperriere and Carter for the remainder of the season, while the Bruins will be counting on the return of Savard. And in the West: San Jose 4, Detroit 2 - Two teams that make it look like they could go all the way. On one hand, the Sharks first line, the best in the league, totalled 1 measly goal – it really has become a familar title over the years: "Whither Joe?" – on the other hand, they nevertheless dispatched the Avs despite Anderson standing on his head. This is the Sharks' year. Vancouver 4, Chicago 3 - Scratch that: this is the Canucks' year. This is a tough call, but I'm confident in Luongo stepping up his game and justifying his olympic medal. |

Sorry Silex, but I predict you go 0-4 this time.
Pitt will dispose of Montreal 4-1
Philly over Boston 4-2
Chicago over Vancouver 4-2. Even though I am a huge Canuck fan, Luongo is too inconsistent to carry the Canucks through this one.
Detroit over San Jose 4-2. The Wings are building momentum, and San Jose will once again self destruct in round 2.

Somehow I missed this first time through...
Pittsburgh over Montreal - 4-0...Ex Leafs can't win 2 rounds for the Habs...
Philly over Boston - 4-2...No real reason, I have two Flyers in the pool.
Van City over Chicago - 4-3...Goaltending will be the deciding factor and I don't trust Niemi.
San Jose over Detroit - 4-1...I think the Sharks are going to throw off the choker label...until next round.

Philly 4 - Habs 0...The Habs sh*t has to run out some time...doesn't it.
Chi 4 - SJ 1...The Sharks will remember who they are and choke, this round...

Still breaking even; but then again, so's just about everybody.
In the East: Montréal 4, Philadelphia 2 - Again, I'll go partisan with no savant analysis or any sort of rationale whatsoever. I'm through trying to figure that conference, it's just too weird this year. In the West: Chicago 4, San Jose 1 - The Sharks haven't so much beat the Red Wings as those have beat themselves; and while I still have misgivings about Niemi, I don't really think highly of Nabokov either. And Joe is still being Joe I guess. It's gonna be an original six finals this year: expect a truckload of Lemaire, Esposito and Pocket Richard flashbacks to the point of nausea. P.S.: LMAO! Too many men on the ice! I can't, no I just can't wait to watch Don Cherry' next segment. Usually I switch channels whenever I start hearing his incessant yelping, but this once I think I'll sit through it just to see if he'll mention something about the too-many men on the ice penalty. |

Yes, I was only 50% too.
But the one series that I knew the best I nailed. Chicago 4-2 over Vancouver. Loungo once again proved he doesn't have the mindset for the big game. He is too belligerent, too easily distracted to be a big game goalie.
Anyways, round 3...
I agree with you Silex. The Habs have got me believing, but how could it be anything but a 7 game series?
Habs 4-Philly 3
And Chicago will roll over San Jose. The pressure will be too much. Niemi doesn't have to be good, just not bad. Same with Nabokov, but Nabby will have a tougher time with that.

What's-his-name got hurt for the rest of the playoffs, so they put What's-this-other-guy's-name in his stead, and what do you know he had four SO in 6 games. I'm even more flabbergasted than before. And what's the effing deal with Gagné? You told me he was gone for the season! God I hate the Flyers.
Chicago 4, Philadelphia 0 - But seriously folks. In recent years many upstarts have found themselves much to their surprise participating in the finals, but this is where that men get separated from boys. The joke's over. |

Well, it was more laborious than anticipated, but in the end logic prevailed. And a sentimental choice as well; the city of Chicago has a long and sad story of futility streaks, including the grand daddy of them all which I think will go on until the end of the world. Plus I think the Hawks have the coolest uniform in all pro sports.
Not to rub anyone's nose in it, but... 1940 - New York Rangers 1955 - Detroit Red Wings 1961 - Chicago Black Hawks 1967 - Toronto Maple Leafs 1968 - (St-Louis Blues, Los Angeles Kings) 1972 - Boston Bruins Congratulations Leaf fans, you have the lead in something now. |
